How to Select the Perfect Bridal Shoes
After the wedding dress, selecting your ideal bridal shoes is next on the priority list. The bridal shoes need to go with the dress, look beautiful, but not be so uncomfortable as to make you stumble or lose your footing in front of your groom and so many wedding guests. You want those bridal shoes to represent all that your wedding day means to you, which makes them a hard decision.
One of the most important things to remember, as you're selecting what's best for each element of your bridal shoes, is your wedding ceremony and reception locations. If you're getting married in a field of grass or on the beach and you have too thin of a heel, your bridal shoes are in danger of sinking in, making you fall, or getting dirty. If your wedding is inside, you have more bridal shoe options.
Also, don't forget to wear your bridal shoes in a bit before the wedding. I understand that you want them to be perfect and clean; so don't wear them outside of the house. Just wear your bridal shoes for a few hours a couple of times to mold them better to your feet. On your wedding day, you'll be glad you did!
There are three basic things to consider when choosing your perfect bridal shoes: heel, color, and style.
The Heel of your Bridal Shoes
You should select the size of your bridal shoe heel based on your wedding location, your aptitude with high heels, and the comfort of the bridal shoes themselves. You want the heel to be high, for aesthetic purposes, but not so high so that you walk awkwardly, slip, or, most importantly, spend your wedding in pain because of your bridal shoes! Besides heel height, consider whether you want a thin or chunk heel on your bridal shoes. Or you could opt for no heel at all, if you're wearing fancy flip flop heels for a beach wedding, for instance.
The Color of your Bridal Shoes
The most important thing to remember about the color of your bridal shoes is that they don't need to match your dress color perfectly. Generally, if your dress is white, your bridal shoes are white. And if your dress is ivory, your bridal shoes are ivory. But no one will notice if your bridal shoe's shade of ivory is slightly different, and that's not necessarily a good thing anyway. Also, you could consider going a slightly less traditional route and getting a metallic shade of bridal shoes, perhaps to match your wedding jewelry.
The Style of your Bridal Shoes
Finally, there's the question of the style of your bridal shoes. While many people may say that the formality of the bridal shoes needs to correspond with the formality of the wedding dress (as in, you can't wear bridal strappy sandals with a long train), I disagree. I think it's your wedding and you should wear whatever kind of bridal shoes make you happy. I wore very sexy strappy bridal shoe sandals with my very formal wedding dress at a March winter wedding, and they were fabulous! So it's up to you to decide whether your bridal shoes should be sandals, slingbacks, pumps, or even sequin-encrusted bridal flip flops. The choice is yours; so enjoy the shoe shopping!
My final word of advice for bridal shoes is to avoid buying them from the wedding dress boutique. They will inevitably be overpriced, and there lots of other great places to buy bridal shoes, online and off.
