The Four Essential Shoes Every Man Should Have in his Closet

While stereotypically women care a lot more about shoes than men do, there are some men out there who defy that stereotype by choosing and wearing a wide range of fabulous men's shoes. For the rest of you men out there, here are the four main types of shoes you should have in your closet. Once you've picked out shoes that fit in each of these categories, you can relax and go back to thinking of things you care more about than what's on your feet. But first, make sure you have the following shoes.

Men's Casual Dress Shoes. Men should have a pair, or preferably two pairs (one black, one brown) of dress shoes. What I would recommend is choosing dress shoes that aren't too dressy so that they can be worn with dress pants, or khakis and jeans. The shinier the material the dress shoes are made of, the more formal they are. As a general rule, your dress shoes should be the same color or darker than your pants. Wear black dress shoes with black, grey, or navy blue pants. Brown dress shoes work better with brown, green, and earth tones.

Men's Dressy Dress Shoes. Unless you wear a suit to work everyday, men don't generally need more than one pair of nice shiny formal dress shoes. You should have at least one pair of dress shoes that look perfect with the suit you tend to wear most. For shoe color guidelines, see the paragraph above on casual dress shoes.

Men's Athletic Shoes. Whether or not you enjoy running or playing sports, you should have an attractive pair of athletic shoes, sneakers, to wear around town. Athletic shoes are casual, but also comfortable. That does not mean, however, that they should be old, dirty, or smelly. Find a pair of attractive sneakers which you like and are comfortable, and be sure to keep those shoes clean.

Men's Sandals. Sandals can be cool, comfortable, and nice-looking shoes to wear in warmer weather. As such, you should never wear this type of shoes with socks. No one finds that attractive! Men often wear sandals with shorts or jeans. Whether or not men's sandal shoes are acceptable in the workplace during the summer depends on your job.
